environmental management: carbon reduction

The CRC scheme will place a cap on the emissions that can be emitted by relevant organizations in the public and private sectors. The scheme applies to all organizations using a total of over 6 MWh of electricity in 2008 equating to approximately an electricity bill in excess of £500,000.

These organizations must purchase sufficient carbon credits for the energy they will use each year. The government will limit the total number of allowances available each year to ensure that overall emissions fall. This scheme is mandatory but will require organizations to self-certify their emissions and back these up by audit. ESP consultants can assist clients:

  • Calculate their total organization-wide energy use emissions. Best practice would be to devise a carbon abatement strategy and consider energy efficiency measures
  • At the start of each compliance year, purchase or sell allowances on the secondary market, or buy through the buy-only link to EU ETS (the safety valve) to cover their total emissions.
  • Monitor, assess and manage emissions throughout the emissions year (1st April to 31st March)
  • Report emissions and surrender sufficient allowances to cover emissions where appropriate
